e-mail in Technion servers

E-mail accounts of academic and administrative staff and graduate students, run on a main mail server tx.technion.ac.il. Academic and administrative staff may also run their account on the computer center's Exchange server. E-mail accounts of under-graduate students run on t2.technion.ac.il.

Mail from these accounts can be read with a variety of programs. In general, all mail programs are one of three main types:

Opening a mail account

For most users opening a mail account is part of opening an account on one of the Computer Center servers. This account serves as the email address of the user.

Undergraduate students will get an account on the students server t2, and staff members and graduate students may open on account on server tx. For more information on opening accounts please click here

Changing password

For security reasons each user must change the account password every six month. This must be done on the server and also in the mail client. You may change password in one of the following ways:

  • Entering the server and type the command: passwd
  • Through the account management site http://cc-account.technion.ac.il
  • By accessing Unix people at the Commuter Center (requires a valid ID).

Procedure for sending mail from out of office/overseas, for Techunix users

Techunix (TX) users can read and send mail from out of office/overseas, using webmail:  http://webmail.technion.ac.il/.

Users who use other e-mail programs (Outlook, Thunderbirs, etc) need to configure and use the outgoing mail server of the Internet Service Provider (ISP), which is not always  easy to know or find.

Following a new service introduced by CIS, this can be done now using your Techunix account, with the following parameters:

  • Technion SMTP server: roger.technion.ac.il
  • username and password as on TX
  • Port: 587
  • Encripted connection: TLS

This procedure will enable one to send messages from his-her laptop/smartphone/other mobile device, from anywhere, without having to worry about or change specific ISP definitions. The connection defined above is an encrypted one !
